Hi-Fi is the high-fidelity, high-intensity flagship New England IPA from Calgary’s Eighty-Eight Brewing Co. While its sibling Wave Pool is a tropical vacation, Hi-Fi is a deep dive into the "haze" craze prioritizing a massive, silky mouthfeel and "saturated" hop flavors. Named in line with the brewery’s love for vintage audio and 80s tech, this beer is designed to be a "loud" expression of modern hops, offering a complex, multi-layered juice profile that has made it one of the most sought-after hazy IPAs in Alberta.
Beer Description
Hi-Fi pours a dense, completely opaque glowing yellow, reminiscent of a fresh pineapple smoothie, with a thick, meringue-like white head and very soft carbonation.
Aroma: The nose is a "wall of sound" of tropical aromatics. Expect a heavy, sweet fragrance of overripe mango, stone fruit (peach/apricot), and a distinct "creamsicle" orange note. There is a subtle, dank herbal quality underneath that adds depth to the fruitiness.
Palate: On the tongue, it is full-bodied with a famously velvety, "chewy" mouthfeel. It leads with a lush sweetness of tropical nectar and citrus pith. Because it is a true-to-style NEIPA, the bitterness is incredibly low and rounded, serving only to balance the rich malt base. The finish is smooth and soft, leaving a lingering "hop juice" sensation on the palate.
Profile: It has a robust ABV of 6.7% and very low perceived bitterness, making it deceptively easy to drink despite its density and strength.
Technical Notes: The signature texture of Hi-Fi comes from a heavy proportion of flaked oats and wheat in the grain bill, which provides the protein required for its permanent opacity. It is "double dry-hopped" (DDH) with a rotating but heavy-hitting selection of hops, typically featuring Citra and Vic Secret. Vic Secret, an Australian hop, is largely responsible for the beer's unique pineapple and pine-resin complexity.
